MISSOULA, Mont. -- Freshmen Lou Baudouin and Irene Riva captured points for the Hornets in singles play, but host Montana came away with a tightly contested doubles point and won the remaining singles contests en route to a 5-2 victory over Sacramento State in a Big Sky Conference women's tennis match in Missoula, Mont., on Friday morning.
The loss snapped the Hornets' three-match winning streak as they fell to 14-5 overall and 3-1 in league play on the year. The Grizzlies improved to 6-10 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
Sacramento State's duo of Baudouin and Mayya Gorbunova posted a win at No. 3 doubles by a 6-3 score to get their team on the board, but Montana outlasted the Hornets in the remaining two contests to come away with the doubles point. The Grizzlies won by a 7-5 score at No. 1 to tie the match, then won at No. 2 in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5), to clinch the point.
Wins at No. 2 and No. 4 singles put Montana up by a 3-0 score before Baudouin earned Sacramento State's first point on the day, defeating Grace Haugen at No. 3 by the scores of, 7-5, 1-6, 6-3. A win at No. 1 singles clinched the match for the Grizzlies just before Riva came away with a straight-set win at No. 5 by the scores of, 7-5, 6-4.
Montana then won in straight sets at No. 6 to wrap-up the dual.
Three of the six singles contests finished in three sets with the Grizzlies bouncing back after a first-set loss at No. 4 and winning the decisive third at No. 1 after splitting the first two sets.
Sacramento State wraps up its trip to the "Treasure State" on Sunday (April 7) at 9 a.m. PT, traveling to Bozeman, Mont., to take on Montana State.
