DAVIS, Calif. -- The non-conference schedule came to a close on Friday afternoon for the Sacramento State women's tennis team as the Hornets fell to host UC Davis at Marya Welch Tennis Center by a 4-0 score.
Sacramento State fell to 16-7 overall on the season heading into its regular season finale against Big Sky Conference rival Portland State on Saturday (April 20) at 11 a.m. on campus. A win over the Vikings and the Hornets claim a share of the league's regular season title for the first time since 2012 and the 10th time overall.
The Aggies improved to 11-12 overall.
A tightly contested doubles point came down to a marathon tiebreaker at the No. 2 spot in the lineup after the Hornet duo of Weronika Ejsmont and Best Lee evened things up with a 6-3 win at the top spot. Sacramento State's duo of Maddy Ferreros and Irene Riva held a 5-3 lead before UC Davis stormed back with the next three points for a 6-5 advantage.
Ferreros and Riva fought off match point with one of their own to knot the contest up at six apiece and then went back-and-forth in the tiebreaker before the Aggies posted an 11-9 win to take an early 1-0 lead in the contest.
UC Davis then secured a trio of straight-set victories in singles play at the No. 5, No. 2, and No. 1 spots in the lineup to clinch the match.
The Hornets opened with first-set victories in each of the other three singles contests and held a lead in the third set in all three before the match was halted with the result in hand.
Prior to first serve on Saturday against Portland State, Sacramento State will honor its two seniors: Mayya Gorbunova and Best Lee for their contributions to the Hornet program as part of "Senior Day" festivities beginning at 10:45 a.m.
