SOFTBALL HITS 5 HOME RUNS, SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER AT MONTANA

MISSOULA, Mont. -- Sacramento State crushed five home runs, including two apiece from Lewa Day and Carley Morfey, on the way to a doubleheader sweep of Montana on Friday afternoon at Grizzly Softball Field.

The Hornets won the first game by a 6-0 score, before taking the nightcap, 5-2. Sacramento State had the bats going, combining for a .383 batting average and 23 hits over the two games, and pitched well in the circle. Hornet hurlers Marissa Bertuccio (8.0 IP) and Caroline Evans (6.0 IP) yielded just two runs and 13 hits while combining for a 1.00 ERA.

Sacramento State reached the 20-win mark and improved to 20-12 overall and 4-1 in the Big Sky Conference. The Hornets have won four straight, and six of the last seven. Sacramento State improved to 24-6 all-time against Montana, the most losses the Grizzlies have suffered against any team. In addition, the Hornets are now just one win shy of 100 conference wins under the guidance of head coach Lori Perez (99-58).

Of the five homers, all were big. Day's two homers moved her to 43 for her career, one shy of the school record of 44, held by Suzy Brookshire. Morfey homered in each game, both moon shots that cleared the fence by at least 25 feet. And the biggest bomb of the day was Amber Rodriguez, who clubbed a pinch-hit 3-run homer to snap a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning of the nightcap.

Bertuccio earned a win in the first game, and a save in the second. She tossed a five-hit shutout in the opener (facing just five batters over the minimum), and followed that with a save in the nightcap. The save came with relative ease as she struck out all three batters she faced in the seventh after the Hornets took the 5-2 lead on the Rodriguez blast.

Seven different Hornets had at least two hits in today's doubleheader, including four apiece from Samantha Parish and Jada Walker. Rylee Gresham, Morfey and Day had three.

Leandra Coronado hit safely in both games, and now owns a 10-game hitting streak, the longest of the season by a Hornet. Coronado's hitting streak coincides with her first 10 starts of the season at shortstop. She is now hitting a whopping .545 in Big Sky play with a .667 on-base percentage.

Caroline Evans was solid, once again, in the circle as the lefty earned the win in the nightcap after allowing just eight hits and two runs in six innings. She now has a 1.87 ERA this season, and her and Bertuccio have become a very dependable 1-2 combination in the circle.

Six Hornets finished the day with RBIs, including three from Rodriguez and Day, two from Morfey, and one each from Walker, Coronado and Rylee Gresham.

Sacramento State and Montana will conclude the three-game series tomorrow for a single game at noon PT. The game will stream on ESPN+.
