SOFTBALL FALLS TO IDAHO STATE; CAN STILL WIN BIG SKY REGULAR SEASON TITLE NEXT WEEK

SACRAMENTO -- Idaho State's Kennedy Dudley had five RBIs to lead the Bengals to a 6-1 victory over Sacramento State in the finale of a three-game series between the two teams on Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

The victory gave Idaho State (16-24, 8-4) a three-game sweep of the Hornets (26-17, 10-5) as the two teams battle for the Big Sky Conference regular season championship. While Sacramento State's conference slate has concluded, the Bengals will play three games at Weber State this Wednesday and Thursday.

Only Idaho State or Sacramento State can win the Big Sky regular season title, and here are the scenarios.

- If ISU wins 0 or 1 games at WSU, Hornets are outright champions
- If ISU wins 2 games at WSU, Hornets and ISU are co-champs but ISU gets tiebreaker
- If ISU wins 3 games at WSU, Bengals are outright champions

No matter what happens next week, Sacramento State cannot finish anything lower than second place in the Big Sky standings. So, the Hornets will have a bye in the first round of the Big Sky Tournament on May 10-13 in Ogden, Utah. The top two seeds get a first round bye at the four-day, double elimination tournament. All six teams in the Big Sky will compete at the postseason event.

Prior to this weekend, Sacramento State had won each of its first four Big Sky series. That all changed, however, as Idaho State was more than up to the challenge. The Bengals' pitching staff posted a 1.00 ERA during the series, holding the Hornet offense to just six runs and 19 hits in 21.0 innings.

Leading the way in the circle for Idaho State was today's winning pitcher Jordan Schuring (9-10). It was Schuring that shut out the Hornets yesterday, and then delivered another complete game effort today, allowing a run and eight his over seven innings. That one Sacramento State run came in the first inning when Lewa Day's RBI-double drove home Jada Walker who had just tripled.

The big blows in today's game came from the bat of Dudley, who crushed a three-run homer in the second inning and followed that with a two-run double in the third. ISU added an insurance run in the fifth inning on an Angelica Cano solo homer.

The Bengals finished with 10 hits, the Hornets had eight hits, and both teams stranded five runners on base.

Hornet starter Marissa Bertuccio (14-8) took the loss, and allowed more than one earned run to a Big Sky opponent for the first time in 10 appearances in league play. Bertuccio is now 6-2 with a 0.92 ERA against conference competition. Savannah Wahl was impressive in relief, allowing just three hits and one run in four innings.

For the Hornets, Jada Walker was 3-for-3 with a run and a triple. Day, Carley Morfey, Alexis Parish, Rylee Gresham and Amber Rodriguez also had Hornet hits.

Today marked the final home game of the season, and the final Big Sky regular season game for the Hornets. Sacramento State does play a pair of non-conference doubleheaders next week, its final tuneups before the Big Sky Tournament. That includes Wednesday at ninth-ranked Stanford, and Friday at Saint Mary's.

NOTES -- Starting catcher Katie Marsh missed her third straight game with injury…prior to today's game, Hornet seniors Nevaeh Pinon, Amber Rodriguez, Gresham and Morfey were honored for their contributions to the program.
