GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State's varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and varsity four each posted top three finishes in their respective heats on the first day of the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championship on Saturday morning at Lake Natoma.
All four of those Hornet boats will advance to tomorrow morning's grand finals. The Hornets' varsity eight placed second in its heat, the second varsity eight was third, the novice eight won its heat, and the varsity four finished third.
Grand final times for tomorrow morning are as follows:
8:30 am - Varsity Eight
9:20 am - Second Varsity Eight
9:50 am - Novice Eight
10:30 am - Varsity Four
Sacramento State's varsity eight (with three freshmen in the boat) narrowly won its heat with a fast time of 6:43.31 over 2,000 meters, trailing San Diego (6:42.42) by less than a second. The second varsity eight placed third with a time of 7:01.53 (a half second out of second place).
The Hornets' novice eight comfortably won its head with a time of 7:17.22. No other crew was within nine seconds of Sacramento State's winning time. In the varsity four, the Hornets went 8:00.71, which was good enough for third.
