DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis combined to score six runs in the first two innings, and never trailed on the way to a 7-4 win over Sacramento State on the final day of the Capital Classic.
After playing the first four games at home during tournament play, the Hornets traveled across the Causeway today to play the Aggies. Despite the loss, Sacramento State concluded the Capital Classic with a 4-1 record, which included wins over Siena, Southern Utah, Saint Mary's and Alabama State.
The Hornets entered today having won five straight and eight of their last nine. Sacramento State dropped to 11-8 overall, while the Aggies improved to 10-5.
Despite Sacramento State notching four runs and nine hits, the Hornets faced a multiple-run deficit the majority of the contest. After UC Davis scored twice in the first inning, the Hornets tied things at 2-2 in the top of the second on a two-run double from
Caroline Evans.
However, the Aggies immediately responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning, and led by at least three runs the rest of the way. The Hornets scored a run in the third inning (
Gwen Ludwig scored on an error) and sixth inning (RBI-grounder from
Rylee Gresham).
Kelsey Alcantara was effective in the circle, throwing 4.1 innings of relief, allowing just five hits with one run and one walk and two strikeouts.
Both Evans and
Carley Morfey finished with two hits. Morfey was 2-for-2, but was pulled in the third inning because of injury.
Gwen Ludwig,
Lewa Day,
Samantha Parish,
Alexis Parish and
Amber Rodriguez also had Hornet hits.
Sacramento State will travel to Southern California next Friday-Sunday when it competes in a tournament co-hosted by Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton.
