SOFTBALL POUNDS OUT 14 HITS IN 11-4 WIN OVER SIENA

SACRAMENTO -- Eight different Sacramento State  starers collected hits, and six had multiple-hit games, on the way to an 11-4 win over Siena on Thursday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

The game was the first of the Capital Classic for the Hornets, who will play four times at home during the tournament. Sacramento State has now won five of its last six games while improving to 8-7 this season. Siena dropped to 8-4 with the loss. The two teams were playing each other for the first time ever.

The Hornets scored three times in both the first and second innings, and five more in the fifth. Sacramento State has now registered 14 hits in back-to-back games, while combining for 23 runs over that span.

Jada Walker, Gwen Ludwig, Lewa Day, Amber Rodriguez, Nikki Barboza and Katie Marsh all had two hits, which included three-run doubles from Rodriguez and Ludwig in the first and second innings, respectively.

With the Hornets leading just, 6-4, the Hornets put things away with a five-run fifth inning that saw Day crush her third home run of the season, a two-run shot. In the process, that improved Day's hitting streak to six games. Also in the inning was an RBI-triple from Jada Walker, RBI-single from Ludwig and sacrifice fly from Barboza. Walker now has a four-game hitting streak.

Ludwig finished with a career-high four RBIs, while Rodriguez had three, and Day two. Day has registered at least one RBI in six straight games.

Marissa Bertuccio (4-3) threw her fifth complete game, allowing eight hits with just one earned run and five strikeouts without a walk. Four Hornet errors contributed to three unearned runs on Bertuccio's line.

Sacramento State returns to action tomorrow on the second day of the tournament to host Southern Utah at 12:30 p.m., and Saint Mary's at 3 p.m.
