PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico - Sacramento State's
Marissa Bertuccio threw a complete game, and
Milan Machado-Buckley went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lift the Hornets to a 5-1 win over Kansas on the second day of the Puerto Vallarta Challenge.
The Hornets are now 1-2 at the three-day event, and conclude the tournament tomorrow morning against Southern Illinois at 8 a.m. PT. Sacramento State is 3-5 overall while Kansas dropped to 4-4.
Bertuccio was dominant in the circle, as she allowed just four hits and one run over seven innings. The right-hander earned her third complete game while walking one, striking out one, and throwing just 91 pitches. She faced five batters over the minimum while lowering her ERA to 2.10. Besides the fourth inning where Bertuccio allowed one run and three hits, she yielded just one hit in the other six innings combined.
Sacramento State was able to break a 1-1 tie in the top of the fifth with four runs. The big blows were an RBI-double from
Jada Walker, and a two-run single from Machado-Buckley. It was also Machado-Buckley that started the game's scoring in the first with an RBI-single. Both hits came with two outs. In fact, four of the Hornets' five runs were scored after two outs had been recorded.
Sacramento State finished with six hits, including Machado-Buckley and Walker who both finished with a pair. Walker was 2-for-3 with a run, walk and an RBI as she reached base in three of her four plate appearances.
Gwen Ludwig (1-for-3 with a run) and
Nikki Barboza (1-for-2 with a walk) also had hits for Sacramento State. Barboza got the start at third base, and a made a number of fine defensive plays throughout the game.
Machado-Buckley is now leading the Hornets in both batting average (.350) and RBIs (6).
