SOFTBALL DROPS A PAIR ON FINAL DAY OF THE NORCAL KICKOFF

SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State's offense combined for four hits over 14 innings as the Hornets dropped a pair of games on the final day of the NorCal Kickoff on Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

The Hornets opened the day with a 2-0 loss to Rutgers, and followed that with a 7-0 loss to Seattle. Rutgers improved to 5-0 and was the only squad in the seven-team tournament to go undefeated. Seattle improved to 3-2.

Sacramento State finished the four-day, season-opening tourney with a 2-3 record. That includes wins over Utah Valley and Pacific, and a loss to UC Davis. The Hornets were co-hosting the tourney with UC Davis.

The Hornets, who had scored a combined 15 runs over their first three games, were held scoreless today. That included two hits apiece against both Rutgers and Seattle.

Marissa Bertuccio was very good in the opener against a Rutgers team that had scored 29 runs over its first four games. The right-hander yielded just six hits and two runs (one earned) with one walk and eight strikeouts over seven innings. She threw 105 pitches, and faced just five batters over the minimum. In the process, Bertuccio, the reigning Big Sky Pitcher of the Year, lowered her ERA to 1.43.

Rutgers pitchers Raimy Gamsby (5.1 ip) and Jaden Vickers (1.2 ip) combined on the two-hit shutout, and allowed just one runner past first base the entire way. The Scarlet Knights scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Sacramento State's Carley Morfey hit what appeared to be a two-run homer, but a strong wind at Shea Stadium prevented the ball from getting out and was caught at the wall.

Amber Rodriguez and Gwen Ludwig had the Hornet hits.

In the loss to Seattle, the Redhawks' Stefanie Madrigal tossed a two-hit shutout while facing just on batter over the minimum. She retired the first 12 batters of the game in succession until Milan Machado-Buckley led off the fifth with a single up the middle. Lewa Day would later add a base hit in the seventh.

Three Hornets pitchers were used in the game, including Savannah Wahl (1.0 ip), Caroline Evans (4.1 ip) and Kelsey Alcantara (1.2 ip).

Sacramento State returns to action next week in Puerto Vallarta from Thursday-Saturday. The Hornets will play four times over those three days, including matchups with North Dakota State, Tennessee, Kansas and Southern Illinois. The Hornets' first games are Thursday against both North Dakota State (1 p.m. PT) and Tennessee (6:30 p.m. PT).
