SACRAMENTO --
Lewa Day had a homer and four RBIs, and
Milan Machado-Buckley had three hits and three RBIs, to lead Sacramento State to a 7-6 win over Utah Valley on Friday afternoon at Shea Stadium.
The win was the first of the season for the Hornets (1-1). Today marked the second day of the NorCal Kickoff, a four-day, seven-team tournament Sacramento State is co-hosting with UC Davis. Utah Valley dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
The Hornets still have three games to play at the tourney, including tomorrow vs. Pacific at 2:30 p.m., and two more games on Sunday.
Sacramento State pounded out seven runs and 11 hits, and seven different Hornets had knocks. Of those 11 hits, five went for extra bases. That included Day's 37th career home run, two doubles from Machado-Buckley, and a double each from
Carley Morfey and
Amber Rodriguez.
The Hornets jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead which included a two-run double in the first from Machado-Buckley, and a three-run homer from Day in the second. Machado-Buckley would later add an RBI-double in the second. Day and Machado-Buckley had already combined for six RBIs by the end of the second inning.
Sacramento State never trailed while tacking on a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Day. The Hornets held a comfortable lead the majority of the game until Utah Valley's Megan Gibbs hit a grand slam in the seventh to make things interesting.
In the circle,
Caroline Evans worked the first three innings for the Hornets while
Kelsey Alcantara worked the final four frames and picked up the win.
Day, Machado-Buckley and Rodriguez (2x3, 2B) each had multiple-hit games.
Samantha Parish,
Carley Morfey,
Alexis Parish and
Gwen Ludwig also had hits. Morfey and
Nikki Barboza each scored a pair of runs.
