FOSTER CITY, Calif. -- The Sacramento State women's rowing squad raced to first-place finishes in both events it entered, which included gold medals in the Collegiate Eight and Collegiate Novice Eight, on Saturday morning at the Head of the Lagoon.
Saturday's racing took place on a five-kilometer course with a time trial format. Sacramento State competed one boat in the Collegiate Eight (eight-boat field), and had a pair of entries in the Collegiate Novice Eight (12-boat field).
In what turned out to be a tremendous day for the Hornets, the team's Collegiate Eight entry took home gold despite the boat featuring six sophomores and two freshmen. In addition, the team's A boat in the Collegiate Novice Eight race defeated Stanford by 28.8 seconds, the largest margin of victory for Sacramento State over a Stanford crew in school history.
The Hornets' entry in the Collegiate Eight raced to a winning time of 19:53.2, more than eight seconds faster than second-place Saint Mary's (20:01.6) and 14 seconds quicker than bronze-medal winning Humboldt State (20:07.4). Crews from Cal (Lightweights), Chico State and Cal Maritime also competed in the race.
In the Collegiate Novice Eight, the Hornets again won handily as the team's A boat cruised to a winning time of 20:48.6, nearly 29 seconds faster than second-place finishing Stanford (21:17.4). Saint Mary's finished third with a time of 21:39.2, followed by fourth-place finishing Sacramento State B (22:20.3) to round out the 12-boat field.
"Today was a pretty solid day for the team," Sacramento State assistant coach George Jenkins said. "As far as the novice group, they've been performing well all year with a fast time at the Head of the American two weeks ago, and another fast time today.
"The varsity boat was a spur of the moment entry and we didn't even practice that lineup, so to come down here and win gold with sophomores and freshmen in the boat was pretty impressive."
