Sacramento State Student-Athlete of the Week (Mar. 4-10)
Women’s golf’s Corinne Viden and softball’s Savanna Corr were named Co-Sacramento State Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of March 4-10. The honor is the first for both this season.
Viden finished in first place at The Gunrock Invitational at Del Paso Country Club and led the Hornets to a convincing victory in the 11-team field. She shot 69-69-70-208 during the three-round tournament at Del Paso Country Club on March 4-5. Her 54-hole total beat her previous best by 10 strokes and topped the Sacramento State record of 211 which had been held by Nishtha Madan, Sofie Babic and Julia Becker.
The sophomore finished the tournament with 16 birdies with just four bogeys and two double bogeys. Her total of 208 left her five strokes ahead of the closest competitor. Overall, she recorded wins over a pair of players ranked among the top 100 in Div. I by Golfstat.
Corr provided one of the biggest moments in the program’s Div. I era (1990-pres.) when she threw a perfect game on Sunday vs. Fairleigh Dickinson at the Louisville Slugger Tournament in Stockton, Calif.. She finished the week 2-1 with a save, a 1.12 ERA and a .141 opponents batting average. In 18.2 innings, she allowed just nine hits, three earned runs, three walks and struck out 21 batters. At one point, Corr retired 27 straight batters over a stretch of three games.
Corr’s perfect game was just the second in Sacramento State’s Div. I era, joining Tami Blunt who accomplished the feat in 1993. Corr retired all 21 batters she faced while striking out eight and throwing 89 pitches. About a half hour after her perfect game, Corr threw four shutout innings against Pacific, earning the win after allowing just two hits.
