THOMSON, DUNCAN POST FASTEST TIMES FOR CROSS COUNTRY AT UCR INVITATIONAL

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Cagnei Duncan led the Sacramento State women's cross country team and Tristen Thomson had the fastest time for the men at the UC Riverside Invitational on Saturday morning. The women's team finished in 10th place overall and the men were 13th.

Duncan ran 20:51.25 over the 6K course to lead the team by nearly two minutes. Her time left her in 13th place overall and just over 30 seconds behind the pace of Cal Poly's Sierra Brill who finished first in 20:20.88. Duncan shaved 51.75 seconds off her time from last year at the same meet.

Rosemary David ranked second among the Hornet contingent in 22:10.75 to place 60th overall. She was followed by Ariana Barrett (77th, 22:28.96), Blayney Dolan (89th, 22:42.13) and Emma Armstrong (123rd, 23:43.42). David and Dolan also had improvements from last year while the other two were making their debut on the course.

Cal Baptist captured the team title with 32 points. The Lancers held off defending Big Sky champion Southern Utah who was second with 54. Cal Poly (72), Utah Valley (104) and UC Santa Barbara (151) completed the top five.

Thomson paced the Hornets for the second consecutive season at the race. He ran 25:05.35 over the 8K course to finish in 38th place. Senior Elijah Changco was 80th overall with a time of 25:55.33 and Shane Marshall ran 25:56.23 to place 83rd. The team also counted times from Santiago Ruiz (112th, 26:30.64) and Abraham Maldonado (142nd, 27:21.41).

Sacramento State finished in 13th place with 364 points. Cal Poly had three top finishers and five in the top 15 to easily win the men's team title with 43 points. CBU (88), UCSB (97), Utah Valley (111) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (124) were second through fifth, respectively.

The Hornets will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 28, when it hosts the Capital Cross Challenge at Haggin Oaks Golf Course.
