QUINONES, SCHEUER REPEAT AS TEAM LEADERS AT SANTA CLARA BRONCOS INVITATIONAL

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — Amy Quinones finished 13th overall to lead the Sacramento State women's cross country team and Sam Scheuer had the fastest time for the men's team at the Santa Clara Broncos Invitational on Saturday at Baylands Parks. The Hornet men's and women's team each finished 14th overall.

Quinones completed the course in 20:59.9 for her fastest 6K of the season. The sophomore's time was just a minute beyond the fastest time from a collegiate athlete. Danielle Shanahan, who was competing unattached, finished first overall in 19:42.0. Texas Tech's Jocelyn Caro was second in 19:47.9.

Gracie Albano ranked second on the team and placed 28th overall in 21:21.7. Haley Heinemann ran 22:08.5 to place 81st and was followed on the team by Jocelyn Orozco (22.52.0/116th) and Ashley Kittle (24:45.6/161st). Each of the Hornets in the lineup posted a season best for a 6K race.

Scheuer finished 74th overall after running 25:07.0 over the 8K course. Freshman Elijah Changco competed at the distance for the first time in his collegiate career and ranked second on the team in 25:10.3 (80th place). Ryan Salcido ran 25:14.6 to finish 89th and Aidan Scharer was 112th with a time of 25:37.3. Ricardo Avila contributed the final score towards the team total after placing 114th (25:38.1). Juan Valierio (25:53.1/127th) and Christopher Goode (26:05.9/135th) completed the competitors for Sacramento State.

Southern Utah won the women's team title with 60 points. The Thunderbirds were followed by UC Santa Barbara (138), Loyola Marymount (148), Saint Mary's (169) and San Diego (172) in the top five. Sacramento State totaled 326 points.

San Jose State scored 79 points to edge UCLA (88) for the top spot in the men's race. UC Santa Barbara (117), Saint Mary's (124) and Loyola Marymount (157) rounded out the top five. Sacramento State finished with 352 points.

The Hornets will have nearly two weeks off before competing at the Big Sky Championships on Friday, Oct. 28, in Moscow, Idaho.
