SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State was limited to a negative hitting percentage (-.043) as UC Santa Barbara cruised to a three-set sweep (25-19, 25-14, 25-15) of the Hornets in the third and final round of the Sacramento State Volleyball Invitational.

With the loss, the Hornets concluded the tournament with an 0-3 record and now sit at 2-5 overall this season. Sacramento State had not gone winless at its own tournament since the 2009 season. The Hornets also lost to Loyola Marymount (3-0) earlier today and to Fresno State (3-2) last night.

Loyola Marymount won the tournament championship with a perfect 3-0 record while UC Santa Barbara finished 2-1, Fresno State 1-2 and the Hornets 0-3. The all-tournament team is listed below.

In its three matches during the tournament, Sacramento State hit a combined .108 while tallying just 9.64 kills, 9.00 digs and 1.36 blocks per set. The Hornets, who have a school-record eight freshmen on the roster, used a lineup with all underclassmen on a number of occasions. In fact, in tonight's match, Sacramento State used 12 players, comprised of five freshmen, five sophomores and two juniors.

"We scheduled a tough tournament this year with some quality opponents in hopes of preparing our team for the rest of the season," Sacramento State head coach Ruben Volta said. "This was a good experience for our young squad to compete against teams capable of playing a high caliber of volleyball. Our players left the gym tonight feeling like we need to meet the challenge, get back in the gym and get better."

Against UC Santa Barbara, the Hornets had 23 kills with 27 errors in 92 attacks. The Gauchos had just 31 kills, but used 11 service aces and 10.0 team blocks to help beat Sacramento State. The Hornets failed to hit better than .000 in any of the three sets.

No players from either team finished with double figures in kills. For the Hornets, Morgan Stanley, Madeline Cannon and Sloan Lovett each had four kills while Lexie Skalbeck finished with two aces and 12 digs. Courtney Dietrich had three kills, three blocks and a .400 hitting percentage, and setter Kennedy Kurtz had 11 assists, an ace and seven digs.

For UC Santa Barbara, Britton Taylor led the way with nine kills while Jaylen Villanueva had seven kills and a .312 hitting percentage.

Sacramento State has just one more home match the rest of the month (Sept. 16 vs. UC Davis) and returns to action next week for a matchup at Nevada on Tuesday before taking part in the two-day, four-team Cal Poly Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
