VOLLEYBALL SIGNS CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL LIBERO LEXIE SKALBECK

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State volleyball head coach Ruben Volta announced today that Central Catholic High School libero Lexie Skalbeck has signed with the program, and will enroll as a freshman at the University this fall.

Skalbeck, who is 5-foot-9 and hails from Portland, Ore., will challenge sophomore Katelyn Ivy for the Hornets' starting libero spot this season, according to Volta.

Skalbeck played three years of varsity volleyball for Central Catholic High School of Portland. During those three seasons, the team combined for a 94-9 overall record, a 43-2 conference mark, two state championships (2010, 2011) and three consecutive 6A Mt. Hood Conference titles. A team captain during her final two seasons, Skalbeck was the team's starting libero as a senior, starting outside hitter as a junior, and played at defensive specialist as a sophomore.

She was a first team all-conference selection as a senior after averaging 4.7 digs per set, and 4.2 aces per match. As a junior, Skalbeck was named second team all-league for a team that won a state title and finished the season with a 33-0 record. The 2012 team posted a 31-5 record, and the 2010 squad went 30-4.

"We are very excited that Lexie will be joining the Hornet family," Volta said. "I like her competitive demeanor and the intensity she brings to the court. She plays defense aggressively, and is very good on serve receive."

Skalbeck is one of five players from the 2013 Oregon Northwest Juniors 18 Elite team that will be playing Div. I volleyball this year.

Sacramento State's recruiting class also includes West Virginia transfer and middle blocker Kendall LaVine, Chelan High School middle blocker Courtney Dietrich, Chaparral High School outside hitter Morgan Stanley and Las Lomas High School setter Rachel Linden.

The Hornets begin preseason practice on Aug. 12, and open the 2013 season at the two-day, four-match La Salle Invitational in Philadelphia on Aug. 31-Sept. 1.
