LOAIZA ESQUIVIAS WINS THIRD STRAIGHT, BUT WOMEN’S TENNIS FALLS 4-1 AT HOME AGAINST CAL STATE FULLERTON

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento State women's tennis team took the courts on a warm Thursday afternoon as they welcomed Cal State Fullerton to Sacramento. Despite a strong win from number one singles player Ana Loaiza Esquivias, the Hornets were unable to overcome an early deficit, falling to Fullerton, 4-1.

Loaiza Esquivias took control early in her match against Fullerton's number one, Genevieve Zeidan. She rolled through the match, winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. The senior improved to 9-5 for the season and has now won her last three matches.

Her win was the only one Thursday for Sacramento State, however, who found themselves trailing quickly and were unable to bounce back.

Sacramento State fell behind immediately, dropping the doubles point to Cal State Fullerton. The pairing of Frana Ugarkovic, who entered the match 2-2 as a team, fell quickly to Fullerton's team, 6-1. Maria Gonzalez and Carolina Chernyetsky weren't far behind, dropping their doubles match, 6-2.

"We started out too slow today," said head coach Cami Hubbs after the match. "The hole got a little too big on us against a solid opponent."

After Loaiza Esquivias's win made it a 1-1 match, Cal State Fullerton took the next three points to clinch the match. Karla Portalatin defeated Sofia Gulnova, 6-2, 6-2 in the number three singles position before Maria Gonzalez fell to Sarah Nuno, 6-3, 6-1. Luxizi Meng won the clincher, 6-2, 6-3, against Sacramento State's Sofi Wicker in the number four singles spot.

"The fight was there," added Hubbs, "and we were in control of a lot of the matches. We need to come out quick tomorrow."

The teams played to clinch based on scheduling. Cal State Fullerton played a full match yesterday and the Hornets will play two matches tomorrow.

Sacramento State will host UC Irvine tomorrow, Friday, March 30 at 10:00 am. They'll then host Eastern Washington in a Big Sky Conference match at 3:00 pm. Both matches will take place at Sacramento State on the Sacramento State Courts.
