SACRAMENTO, Calif. - After missing tournaments earlier in the fall, Sacramento State's Sofia Gulnova and Frana Ugarkovic participated in last weekend's CSUN Invitational in both singles and doubles play.
The tournament, hosted by CSUN in Los Angeles from Friday, Nov. 10 through Sunday, Nov. 12, included Iowa State, Youngstown State, Oral Roberts, Long Beach, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State LA, Azuza Pacific, and Westmont University in addition to Sacramento State.
The tournament guaranteed each participant eight matches, an important factor for Ugarkovic and Gulnova who each missed out on playing time earlier this fall. Ugarkovic, missed the team's first fall tournament and Gulnova missed the second. Both were looking for more time on the court before the team breaks for the winter.
"We knew we needed to find another opportunity to Sonya and Frana to get on the court before the fall season ended," shared women's head coach Cami Hubbs. "I'm glad we were able to find an opportunity for the two to get some extra matches."
Each won a singles match with Gulnova participating in the A draw and Ugarkovic in the D draw. The pair also competed as a team for the first time this fall, dropping all four of their matches.
The tournament is the last competitive play for the Hornets this fall. They'll head into winter before opening the season with a Jan. 20 matchup at Fresno State. See the full women's tennis schedule here.
