PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State women's tennis team traveled to the Bay Area this past weekend for the ITA Northwest Regional Tournament at Stanford University. All seven of the team's players took to the courts, winning a combined 12 matches over the course of the tournament and six of seven winning at least one match.
All seven players on the Hornets roster made the trip to Palo Alto, including senior Ana Loaiza Esquivias, junior Sofi Wicker, sophomores Carolina Chernyetsky, and Sofia Gulnova, and freshmen Jenna Dorian, Maria Gonzalez, and Frana Ugarkovic.
In addition to Sacramento State, the regional tournament included teams from host Stanford, Cal, Santa Clara, University of the Pacific, San Jose State, Portland State, Gonzaga, University of Oregon, Cal Poly SLO, UC Davis, Eastern Washington, University of San Francisco, Seattle, Fresno State, and Saint Mary's.
Tournament play opened on Thursday will all seven Hornets players participating in the Open Singles round of 128. Wicker, Dorian, and Esquivias all started their weekend with a win, advancing to the round of 64 where all three drew seeded opponents. Despite some well-played matches, none were able to advance.
Esquivias put up a spectacular fight against the ninth seed, Fresno State's Katerina Stloukalova, and battled to a 6-4; 7-6(3) loss. Dorian fell to Cal's Anna Bright (9) while Wicker went down in back-to-back sets against San Jose State's Sybille Guavain (3).
Sacramento State fared well in consolation play, winning three of four Friday matches and two of seven on Saturday. In total, Sacramento State collected eight wins in singles play throughout the tournament.
"We learned a lot about ourselves playing against some of the best players and teams in the country," said women's head coach Cami Hubbs. "Overall it was a good showing and a good end to our fall season as a team."
Among those teams were highly seeded opponents from Stanford, Oregon, San Jose State, Fresno, and Cal.
The Hornets looked good in doubles play, as well, winning four of seven matches. The teams of Gonzalez/Esquivias and Dorian/Wicker each advanced to the round of 32 where again they ran into trouble with highly-seeded opponents.
With the fall season now concluded, the women's team will look to the spring. "We are really looking forward to the season," added Coach Hubbs. "We're excited to showcase all of the hard work we've put in this fall."
