STRONG SHOWING BY WOMEN’S TENNIS IN FIRST FALL TOURNAMENT

BERKELEY, Calif. - This past weekend, the Sacramento State women's tennis team opened its 2017-2018 season with the Cal Invitational. The tournament ran Friday through Sunday and six of seven Sacramento State players won at least one match, including a weekend-best three matches in singles play by sophomore Sofia Gulnova and senior Ana Loaiza Esquivias. Overall, junior Sofia Wicker won five matches over the weekend - two in singles play and three in doubles - to lead the team.

Gulnova, who went 10-1 in conference play last season as a freshman, dropped her first match of the weekend to Santa Clara's Katya Tabachnick 6-2, 6-1 in the Singles Gold bracket. After advancing to the consolation quarterfinals on a walkover (injury), Gulnova battled her way through the rest of the draw, defeating both Cal's Alexis Nelson and UC Davis' Isabella vone Ebbe in three sets. Both matches went to a third set super tiebreaker, with Gulnova winning each 10-8 and 10-7, respectively.

Her run ended in the consolation finals, though, where Gulnova fell to Pacific's Anneroos Nederstigt 6-3, 6-2.

Esquivas won her first match of the tournament, upsetting the No. 8 seed Anastasia Abramyan of BYU 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the Blue Singles draw. She dropped her next match in the round of 16, but rolled through the Round Robin, defeating Cal Poly's Moly Reed 6-1, 6-1 and Pacific's Maayan Sela 6-2, 6-1. In total, the senior dropped just five games in her last two matches.

In the Gold Singles draw, Wicker won her first match 6-4, 6-4 against BYU's Katie Fitt. After falling in her next match, the junior from Mexico City won one of two Round Robin matches on Sunday, taking down Danielle McIntyre (SM) in dominant fashion, 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles play, Wicker partnered with Nevada's Maria Tatarnikova where they claimed the White Doubles consolation bracket championship, defeating a duo from Cal Poly 6-1. Wicker also partnered with teammate Garcia in Sunday's White Doubles Round Robin. The duo defeated a pair from USF, giving Wicker a total of five wins - two in singles play and three in doubles - over the weekend.

In total, seven players traveled to the event for Sacramento State. In addition to Gulnova were two other sophomores, Carolina Chernyetsky and Valeria Garcia, and two freshmen Jenna Dorian and Maria Fernanda Gonzalez. Wicker and Esquivias are the team's only upper classmen.
