SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Freshman Alina Soltanici earned a win at No. 1 singles and the Hornets also won the No. 1 doubles match but No. 63 UC Irvine took the doubles point and won three singles matches for a 4-1 win on Saturday on the Sacramento State tennis courts.
Playing without two of its top players, sophomores Jennifer Nguyen and Daria Savchenko, Sacramento State (9-11) had to shuffle its order in singles and make new doubles teams. The duo of sophomore Olivia Boija and senior Sophie Lohscheidt were in their normal spot at No. 1 doubles, however, and took an 8-7 (4) victory. UC Irvine (13-5) won at No. 2 and 3 though to claim the first point of the match.
Soltanici was superb at No. 1 singles, defeating top-UC Irvine player Sarah Gong 6-1, 6-0 for her third victory of the season playing at the top spot. Freshman Deimante Bulatovaite won her first set at No. 5 and Lohscheidt was up in the second set at No. 2 but both of those matches went unfinished as the Anteaters earned straight-set victories at No. 3, 4 and 6 to clinch the match.
The match was the seventh of the year for Sacramento State against a nationally ranked opponent. The team will face another ranked team on Sunday when it hosts No. 42 Saint Mary's on campus at 1 p.m. Sacramento State's final home match of the year will also be senior day for Lohscheidt and Katharina Knoebl.
