OGDEN, Utah – Sacramento State sophomore Daria Savchenko has been named Big Sky Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. The award is the first for Savchenko and the seventh for the Hornets in just nine weeks of competition this season.
Savchenko, a sophomore transfer from Uta, Russia by way of Sierra College, went 3-1 in singles and 3-1 in doubles while leading the Hornets to 7-0 sweeps at Northern Colorado and North Dakota.
She earned two wins at No. 1 singles, beating Adriana Nieto of Northern Colorado 6-2, 6-1 and Stephanie Petsis of North Dakota 6-2, 6-3. Earlier in the week she played at No. 2 against UC Santa Barbara and beat Kaiulani Boyer 6-4, 6-2 while she took a loss at No. 2 against No. 56-ranked Long Beach State.
Savchenko teamed with senior Katharina Knoebl at No. 2 doubles in each of the four Hornet matches during the week. The duo won 8-2 over Faith Lee and Lacey Sprinkel of North Dakota, had an 8-4 win at Northern Colorado, and an 8-0 sweep against UC Santa Barbara.
Savchenko is undefeated in both singles and doubles in Big Sky play this season and is 9-6 overall in singles and 13-6 in doubles. She has won 10 of her last 11 doubles matches at No. 2 playing with Knoebl and sophomore Jennifer Nguyen.
