LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 56 Long Beach State swept doubles and earned five singles victories for a 6-1 win over Sacramento State on Thursday afternoon in Long Beach. The 49ers improved to 14-2 on the season while the Hornets dropped to 7-10 after facing their sixth nationally ranked team of the season.
Long Beach State controlled doubles play, winning 8-2 at No. 1 and 8-3 at No. 2 and 3. The Hornets had won the doubles point in each of their last eight matches but could not overcome the 49ers for the first point of the match on Thursday.
The lone Sacramento State win came at No. 6 singles, where freshman Deimante Bulatovaite rallied after losing the first set to defeat Holly Reid 4-6, 7-5, 10-8. Senior Katharina Knoebl won the second set against Hayley Thompson at No. 5 but was narrowly outlasted 6-3, 6-7(4), 10-7.
Long Beach State took the top four singles matches in straight sets, though freshman Alina Soltanici battled top-49er Maeva Razakasoa in a close 6-3, 7-6(2) loss at No. 1.
Sacramento State remains on the road for a pair of Big Sky contests at Northern Colorado Saturday and at North Dakota on Sunday.
