TUCSON, Ariz. – Sacramento State took the doubles point and won four singles matches to clinch its first win of the season, topping UTEP 5-2, on Sunday in Tucson, Ariz. The Hornets are now 1-4 on the young season while UTEP dropped to 1-5.
A pair of Sacramento State newcomers picked up their first singles victories as Hornets on Sunday. Sophomore transfer Daria Savchenko moved up to No. 3 and claimed a 7-6, 5-2 straight-set win over UTEP's Marie LeBlond, the first win the team has had at No. 3 this season. Freshman Deimante Bulatovaite picked up her first collegiate singles win at No. 4 in a 6-3, 7-5 victory.
At No. 5 singles sophomore Olivia Boija improved to 4-0 this season with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-2 triumph while senior Sophie Lohscheidt won 6-2, 7-6 at No. 6. The Miners earned wins at the top two singles positions but the win by Savchenko at No. 3 clinched the team victory for Sacramento State.
In doubles, Boija and Lohscheidt moved up to No. 1 but took a narrow 7-6 loss. The Hornets were dominant in the two other doubles matches, with Bulatovaite and Savchenko winning 6-1 at No. 2 and freshman Alina Soltanici and senior Katharina Knoebl taking the No. 3 match 6-2.
The Hornets are off for two weeks before playing at Causeway rival UC Davis on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 11 a.m.
