WOMEN'S TENNIS FALLS AT NO. 5 USC IN FIRST ROUND OF NCAA TOURNAMENT

LOS ANGELES — The Sacramento State women's tennis team had its 2013 season come to a close with a 4-0 loss at No. 5 USC on Saturday at the Marks Tennis Stadium.

The Hornets finish the year with a 13-14 overall record. The team earned the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament after winning the Big Sky Conference Tournament for the 12th consecutive season.

USC improved to 22-2 overall and will face UC Irvine in the second round on Sunday.

The Trojans claimed two quick doubles victories to get started. Danielle Lao and Valeria Pulido struck first, winning 8-2 at No. 3. The No. 2 nationally ranked tandem of Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria clinched the doubles point with an 8-0 win at No. 1.

In singles play, Ellie Yates defeated Andrea Gomez Carus, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6 to give USC a 2-0 lead. Giuliana Olmos downed Olivia Boija, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 before Zoe Scandalis, the 27th-ranked singles player in Div. I, defeated Sophie Lohscheidt, 6-1, 6-0.

The three remaining singles matches were halted after the Trojans clinched the victory. USC was up a set in all three.
