WOMEN’S SOCCER BATTLES HAWAII TO SCORELESS DRAW IN SATURDAY NIGHT MATCH

HONOLULU, Hawaii. – After arriving in Hawaii on Friday for the Rainbow Wahine Soccer Invitational, the Sacramento State women's soccer team finally took the field Saturday evening. The Hornets took on tournament host Hawaii and the two teams battled to a scoreless draw after double-overtime.

It was the defenses that took center stage in Saturday night's matchup between Sacramento State (1-1-1) and Hawaii (1-2-1), especially in the first half.

Combined, the Hornets and Rainbow Wahine took just three shots - one for Sacramento State and two for a Hawaii - through the game's first 45 minutes of action.

The second half saw an increase in the action, especially on the Hawaii attack. The Rainbow Wahine piled up nine second half shots compared to the Hornets' one. That trend continued into the overtime periods, with Hawaii outshooting Sacramento State, 4-2 in the extra periods.

In total, Hawaii took 15 shots to the Hornets' four, placing six of them on goal. Hornets keeper Aaliyah Fesili made five saves in the draw and got some help from her defense late, as the Hornets defense collected a team save in the 105th minute.

The shutout performance is Sacramento State's first since blanking Idaho State at home, 3-0, on Sept. 28, 2018. Last season, the Hornets held their opponents scoreless just twice.

Kylee Kim-Bustillos and Alyssa Baena accounted for Sacramento State's two shots on goal in the draw, both in extra time. Baena's came in the first overtime while Kim-Bustillos came with just seconds remaining on the clock in the second overtime.

With the draw, Sacramento State moves to 1-1-1 on the young season while Hawaii moves to 1-2-1.

Saturday's match was just the first of two island competitions for the Hornets. After an off-day tomorrow, Sacramento State will be back on the pitch on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2 against Nevada in the final match of the Rainbow Wahine Soccer Invitational.
