⚽ 34' Craig (1)
⚽ 66' Torres-Benito (1)
⚽ 72' Kim-Bustillos (2)
Sacramento State (1-1-0) started the afternoon match slowly against the Mustangs (0-1-1), but jumped to life when Kylee Kim-Bustillos connected with Samantha Craig for a quick strike goal in the 34th minute.
Charging hard down the field, Kim-Bustillos dropped a short pass to Craig at the top of the box. Craig made one move on the ball to lose her defender before driving one high into the left side. The diving Mustangs keeper got a hand on the ball, but the shot was too powerful and found its way into the back of the net.
The Hornets held on to their lead through the rest of the first half, but the Mustangs found the equalizer in the 54th minute.
Just 15 minutes later, though, Sacramento State took back control of the match with a near-perfectly executed set piece in the 66th.
Aubrey Goodwill took the free kick from just outside the left side of the box, dropping one perfectly into the middle. Ariana Nino put one touch on the ball, setting up newcomer Shantel Torres-Benito, who poked it in from just five yards out.
It was Kim-Bustillos getting back in on the action in the 72nd minute, scoring her second goal of the season and the Hornets' third of the day after a perfectly placed cross off the foot of Erika Munoz.
Kim-Bustillos, who scored the team's lone goal in Friday's match, now has two goals and an assist in two matches this season.
Sunday's three-goal affair was its first September 2019 in a 3-0 win over Idaho at home.
With the win, Sacramento State improves to 1-1-0 on the young season while Cal Poly falls to 0-1-1.
The Hornets will head back out on the road for an exciting tournament in Hawaii. The team will play two matches - first against the host Warriors on Saturday, Aug. 31 and then against the Nevada Wolfpack on Monday, Sept. 2. Both games are set for 6:30 pm PT kickoffs.
