DAVIS, Calif. – The Sacramento State women's soccer team began the regular season on the road Friday evening, taking on Causeway rivals UC Davis at Aggies Field. Despite an early score by Kylee Kim-Bustillos, the Hornets were unable to slow the Aggies attack, falling 3-1.
Kim-Bustillos gave Sacramento State (0-1) the early advantage over UC Davis (1-0), driving home her and the team's first goal of 2019 in just the second minute of play. After receiving a pass from Ariana Nino, Kim-Bustillos blasted one toward the goal. Although the Aggies keeper got a hand on it, the ball had enough momentum on it to find its way into the back of the net.
The goal is the first of the year for Kim-Bustillos, who, two seasons ago, set a program record with 11 goals as a freshmen. Last season, Kim-Bustillos seemed on track for a repeat season, scoring an early-season goal and piling up four assists before an injury ended her season after just 10 games.
For Nino, the assist was her first since the 2017 season, when she recorded two as a freshman.
Despite the early advantage, Sacramento State was unable to stem the tide of the UC Davis offense. The Aggies countered just over 10 minutes later, getting the equalizer in the 13th minute before taking the lead in the 18th.
UC Davis added their third and final goal just after the half in the 50th minute of play.
In total, the Hornets were outshot, 20-11, including 10-4 in shots on goal.
Making her first start since her record-setting freshman season, Hornets goalkeeper Aaliyah Fesili totaled seven saves Friday night, but even that wasn't enough for Sacramento State. Fesili recorded a spectacular 0.84 goals against average, the third-lowest in program history, in 2017 but missed all of last year with injury.
The loss drops the Hornets to 0-1 but they will have a chance to bounce back in just two days when they host Cal Poly at Hornet Field on Sunday, Aug. 25. The women's team will take on the Mustangs at 1 p.m.
The match is the team's and Sacramento State's first regular season home athletic event of the 2019-20 academic year. For more information, including details on live video streams, tickets, and more, be sure to visit the Sacramento State women's soccer schedule online at HornetSports.com.
