WOMEN’S SOCCER EXHIBITION GOES TO DOUBLE OVERTIME, 24 PLAYERS SEE ACTION IN PRESEASON TUNE UP

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State kicked off the 2019 season of Hornets women's soccer Friday morning when the team hosted Fresno State in a preseason exhibition match. On a hot Friday afternoon, the two teams went to extra time before the Bulldogs took the match, 2-1.

The game-winner came off the foot of Fresno State's Melissa Ellis in the 102nd minute after a loose ball got lost in the box in front of the Hornets' goal.

Fresno State also scored the first goal of the game, as Lorena Montanes played a blocked ball for a goal in the 17th minute.

The equalizer for Sacramento State came in he 61st minute as Samantha Craig drove one home from the top of the 18. Craig punched one into the back of the net in the top left corner after a great pass from midfielder Erika Sosa

Craig, one of 11 newcomers to the 2019 Sacramento State squad, is coming off a season in which she scored 15 goals in 22 games last year. 

Tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, the two teams traded shots in a scoreless first overtime before Fresno State found the net for the game-winner two minutes into the second overtime period.

Both teams took advantage of the exhibition matchup, using nearly every player on their respective benches. For Sacramento State, 24 different players saw minutes on Friday, all in double-digits. Junior Ariana Nino led the team with 96 minutes while two others - captain Mikayla Reed (85 minutes) and Julia Herrera (90) minutes - broke the 80-minute mark.

For the Bulldogs, 23 different players saw action, including four over the 80-minute mark.

The preseason tune up is the only one for the Hornets this year as they open the regular season on the road next Friday, August 23 at Causeway Rival UC Davis. The match is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at Aggies Soccer Field in Davis, Calif.

Sacramento State's home opener is scheduled for Sunday, August 25 when the Hornets host Cal Poly at 1 p.m. at Hornet Field. That is also the first of a women's and men's doubleheader as the Sacramento State men's soccer team will host Santa Clara later that same evening.
