WOMEN’S SOCCER BATTLES FRESNO STATE TO 2-2 DRAW

FRESNO, Calif. The Sacramento State women's soccer team continued their season-opening road trip with a Friday night match at Fresno State. Despite taking a second-half lead, the Hornets saw the Bulldogs score a late equalizer to force overtime, and ultimately, a 2-2 draw.

The first half went nearly without score, but the Hornets and senior captain Caitlin Prothe broke the scoreless tie with a go-ahead goal in the 41st minute. Kylee Kim-Bustillos placed a perfect cross to Prothe in the box, who headed it past the Fresno State goalie for her first goal of the year.

For Kim-Bustillos, the assist was her second of the season (three games). She led the team last year with four assists.

After the half, Fresno State was quick to counter, pulling even with their first goal of the year in the 48th minute.

That tie lasted for nearly 25 minutes before Skylar Littlefield put the Hornets back on top. Driving down the field, Littlefield broke through the Bulldogs defense before slamming one into the back of the net from the top of the box.

With the goal, Littlefield now has two goals on the season through the first three games of the year, setting a new career mark. Last season, Littlefield, who played in all 20 matches for the Hornets, scored just once.

After Fresno State scored the equalizer in the 77th minute, the game remained scoreless despite multiple chances for both teams.

In total, the Hornets outshot the Bulldogs, 20-15, and placed eight of those shots on goal. Prothe led the way, efficiently placing three of her four shots on goal.

Sacramento State took four shots in the two combined overtime periods compared to Fresno State's three.

Both Kaylyn Evans (56 minutes) and Ailey Collins (64 minutes) saw time in goal for the Hornets, combining for three saves. Five Sacramento State players played the full 120 minutes Friday night while two others totaled over 100.

Friday night's match at Fresno State ends the Hornets' three-game road trip to open the season. They will return to Hornet Field for their home opener on Sunday when they host causeway rival UC Davis. The match is scheduled for a 1:00 pm kick off.

Sunday is also the 2019 Student-Athlete kick off for all Sacramento State students and student-athletes.
