SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Sacramento State women's soccer team opened the 2018 season with an exhibition match on the road at San Jose State. The two teams played to a scoreless draw over three periods in the season's first contest.
The two teams played three 30-minute periods before the match ended in a tie. Sacramento State used 20 different players in the match, including five newcomers. Junior midfielder and team captain Mikayla Reed was one of three players to play all 90 minutes in the contest. She was matched by returning starting defender, sophomore Christina Lazar, as well as newcomer Mia Wilson, a junior defender.
The Hornets took six shots, placing three on goal. Erika Sosa led the team with two shots while Julia Herrera, Ariana Nino, and Alyssa Baena each placed one shot on goal. San Jose State took five shots, placing two on goal.
Junior Kaylyn Evans started the game in goal for Sacramento State, playing the first 60 minutes while saving the only shot on goal against her. Freshman keeper Ailey Collins, sister of recent Hornet graduate Kayla Collins, played the last 30 minutes, also saving the only shot against her.
The Hornets come into the 2018 season with a young and talented squad as they look to advance to their fourth consecutive postseason. Monday afternoon's match against San Jose State is the first of three exhibition contests this season. The Hornets will next play on Friday as they host Cal at 11:00 am at Sacramento State.
