WOMEN’S SOCCER DEFEATED BY IDAHO

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by senior Rachel Leonard but Idaho came back to take a 2-1 advantage into halftime and added on three scores in the second half for a 5-1 win.

Sacramento State (3-6-4, 1-2-2 Big Sky) had allowed just 11 goals through its first 12 games of the season and had not allowed more than two goals in any game this year. The defending Big Sky champion, Idaho (7-4-2, 4-1-0 Big Sky) scored five goals for the second consecutive game.

"The score wouldn't show it but I was actually fairly pleased by the way we played," Sacramento State head coach Randy Dedini said. "They were opportunistic and scored their chances. I thought the team that played better soccer was us but the team that converted their chances was them, so we just have to capitalize more and avoid some mistakes defensively."

Idaho's Clara Gomez scored both goals for the Vandals in the first half and Emma Eddy scored all three in the second half for a natural hat trick. It was just a 3-1 score into the 82nd minute before Eddy scored her last two goals, with the third coming with just 14 seconds left in regulation time.

The game started well for the Hornets and the home team got on the board in the 16th minute. Idaho was whistled for a foul to the left of their box 10 yards off the goal line, and Leonard's free kick made its way through traffic untouched and rolled inside the far post.

Idaho tied it on the first goal from Gomez in the 29th minute and doubled their lead when Gomez converted a penalty kick in the 36th minute. The game could have easily been level 2-2 at the break as in the 43rd minute senior Jennifer Lum arced a shot that just hit off the post and senior Adaurie Dayak had an open rebound attempt but off a bouncing ball her shot missed high.

The Vandals made it a 3-1 lead early in the second half in the 52nd minute. The Hornets took seven shots with three on goal in the second half but could not close the deficit.

Idaho had a 22-14 edge in shots overall and was 12-7 in shots on goal. Corner kicks were 5-1 in favor of the Vandals, who have won by at least two goals in each of their four Big Sky wins.

Sacramento State looks to rebound on Sunday hosting Idaho State at 1 p.m. In the team's final weekend home game of the year the 11 graduating Hornet seniors will be honored prior to the game.
