YOUTH GUIDES GYMNASTICS TO SEASON HIGH AT DENVER

DENVER, Colo. — The Sacramento State gymnastics team scored a season high 190.150 and were led by its underclassmen on Saturday night at Hamilton Gym. Despite the score, the Hornets finished in fourth place behind eighth-ranked Denver (196.175), 22nd-ranked Central Michigan (193.250) and Texas Woman's (190.200).

Sacramento State started the meet on beam where it totaled 47.625. The team was led by a pair of freshmen as Shaye Mathias tied for sixth place with a 9.725 and Amber Koeth was close behind with a 9.675 which tied for eighth. Sophomore Kendra Braida opened the rotation with a 9.575 and Tara Catour provided a 9.450 in her first beam routine of the season.

The team shifted to floor in the second rotation where Jordyn Brent scored 9.775 as the anchor of the lineup. The sophomore has now scored 9.775 in all three of her floor routines this season. Carly Pratt and Alexis Belkoff received 9.650s which tied for 14th overall and second on the team. Overall, the team scored 47.775 but was forced to count a fall for the second straight event.

The Hornets' highest scoring event came on vault where they tallied a 47.850. Belkoff tied for ninth place with a 9.700 to guide Sacramento State. Brent and Lauren Schmeiss scored 9.650 and 9.600, respectively for the team's next highest scores.

Freshman Destiny Watley scored a career high 9.650 to lead the team on bars and Brent added a 9.625 to finish one spot back.

Denver dominated the competition, scoring at least 48.300 on all four events. The Pioneers separated from the rest of the field during the second rotation as they totaled 49.525 on bars. Individually, DU had all four event winners as well as the all-around champion. Maddie Kerr finished first on vault (9.850) and bars (9.975). Kaitlyn Schou had the high score on beam with a 9.950 and Lynnzee Brown was first on floor (9.925) and in the all-around (39.475).

Sacramento State will return to Northern California to take part in a three-team meet at UC Davis which includes Alaska Anchorage on Sunday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m.
