SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State gymnastics team rallied on floor during the final rotation to finish in second place in a three-team meet against No. 21 Stanford and Seattle Pacific on Friday night at The Nest. The Hornets trailed SPU by one-tenth entering the final rotation but scored 48.625 on floor to earn the team's first win of the year.
Sacramento State finished the meet with a total of 189.950. Stanford improved to 5-0 after scoring 194.650 and Seattle Pacific totaled 189.825.
Senior Carly Pratt sparked the team's comeback in the fourth rotation with a 9.725 in her leadoff spot. Alexis Belkoff added a career high 9.800 and freshman Destiny Watley followed two routines later with a 9.650. Meanwhile, the Falcons were off to a strong start on vault, forcing the Hornets to hit their final two routines. Senior Lauren Schmeiss responded with a 9.675 and sophomore Jordyn Brent scored 9.775 for the second time this week to secure the win.
Sacramento State started the night on vault with a 47.750. Belkoff tied for fourth place at 9.750 and Brent was two spots back at 9.700. The team was led by Brent on bars with a 9.675 to finish fifth. However, the Hornets counted multiple falls in the event and finished at 45.775.
The back half of the beam lineup overcame a pair of early miscues to put the team on track for its showing on floor. Brent started the rally with a 9.650. Courtnee Marquez added a career best 9.600 and freshman Shaye Mathias anchored the lineup with a 9.675 to place sixth overall.
Brent continued her hot start to the season with an all-around total of 38.800 which placed her third. Stanford's Kyla Bryant scored 39.175 to claim her second title in five days. Darian Burns of SPU opened her season at 38.850
