SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State gymnastics team started its 2019 season by scoring 190.000 and finishing fourth at the NorCal Classic on Sunday at The Nest. Stanford, which entered the season ranked 21st nationally, won the meet with a 195.175.
Sophomore Jordyn Brent led Sacramento State in the all-around with a four-event total of 38.875. Brent, who was competing in her first collegiate all-around, placed third overall. Stanford's Kyla Bryant won the individual title with a total of 39.475. Bryant also finished first on vault, bars and beam and tied for first on floor.
The Hornets struggled through their first two events, scoring 47.900 on vault and 45.750 on bars. The meet started on an unfortunate note for Sacramento State as freshman Wanda Deriot was injured on the first routine of the day for the team and had to be carried off. From there, Brent led the team with a 9.700 on vault and was followed by Alexis Belkoff (9.675).
On bars, the Hornets had falls on their first three routines before freshman Destiny Watley stopped the streak with a 9.500. Brent followed with a 9.600 but the team ended up counting three falls during the rotation.
Sacramento State bounced back in the third rotation with a 48.850 on beam. Kendra Braida returned to her leadoff spot and started the rotation with a 9.725. Lauren Schmeiss added a 9.800 and freshman Amber Kother extended the run with a 9.775. Brent matched Schmeiss' score and the pair tied for ninth overall. Freshman Shaye Mathias rounded out the rotation with a 9.750 to give the team five score of at least 9.725.
The team wrapped up the meet on floor with a 47.500. Brent anchored the lineup with a 9.775 and tied for seventh place. Schmeiss ranked second on the team at 9.700 and Belkoff added a 9.675.
