GYMNASTICS PLACES THIRD AT MPSF CHAMPIONSHIPS; SOLIWODA WINS BARS

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Sacramento State women's gymnastics team scored at least 195 points for the second consecutive meet but finished third at the MPSF Championships on Saturday at San Jose State. The Hornets totaled 195.175 but trailed SJSU (195.925) and UC Davis (195.175) in the team standings.

The Hornets opened the meet with a bye before scoring a season-high 49.200 on bars. The team counted five scores of at least 9.775, including three of 9.850 or better. Caitlin Solioda was the individual champion in the event with a 9.925 which ties for the fourth best in program history. Lauren Rice was third with a 9.875 and Courteney Ng shattered her career best with a 9.850 to tie for fifth place. The team also counted a pair of 9.775 from Jackie Sampson and Courtney Soliwoda.

Sacramento State led after two rotations following a beam rotation where it scored 48.600. Caitlin Soliwoda scored a career best 9.900 but finished third in the event. Rice also had the highest beam score of her career with a 9.875 and Julia Konner and Jackie Sampson each received a 9.750.

The Hornets produced a 49.000 on floor to remain among the leaders. Caitlin Soliowda scored 9.850 to tie for third and Rice tied for fifth at 9.825. Jennifer Brenner ranked third on the team at 9.800.

The team concluded the meet on vault while SJSU was on bars and UC Davis ended on floor. Sacramento State scored 48.375, the Spartans took the lead with a 48.850 and UCD finished with a total of 48.900. The Hornets were tightly bunched with the five counting scores ranging from 9.600-9.750. Julia Konner led the team with a 9.750.

Caitlin Soliwoda and Rice placed second and third in the all-around. Soliwoda finished with a four-event total of 39.350 which was just off the mark of UC Davis' Alexis Brown who scored 39.375. Soliwoda's score is tied for the third-best in school history and is the highest by a junior. Rice had a season best 39.225.
