BERKELEY, Calif. — Kalliah McCartney tied for first on vault to lead the Sacramento State gymnastics team on Saturday night at Cal. The Hornets could not overcome a rough first rotation on beam and finished third with a team score of 193.425. Cal won the meet at 196.426 while Washington was second at 195.000.
Sacramento State began the meet on beam but had three of its six gymnasts fall, resulting in a score of 47.525. Conversely, Cal scored 49.075 on vault and Washington tallied a 48.825 on bars to put the Hornets in a deep hole. Sacramento State did have a couple of bright spots in the rotation as Kayla Wonderly scored a career high 9.850 to place fifth. Kailey Hansen tied for sixth with a 9.825.
The Hornets compiled their second best floor score (48.900) of the year during the second rotation. Hansen and Dallas Smith each received a 9.825 to tie for sixth place. Maddie Montoya and Jesse Williams were close behind with a pair of 9.775s to tie for 11th and Julia Konner tallied a 9.700.
On vault, Sacramento State continued the success its had all year with a 48.775. McCartney led the charge with a 9.825. That mark placed her in a tie with Cal's Serena Leong and Alicia Asturias for the top spot in the meet. Hansen and Williams each received a 9.800 to tie for fourth place. Tina Necas added a 9.700 and Katie Osaki a 9.625 to place 12th and 13th, respectively.
The team ended the meet on bars with a 48.225. Williams tied for eighth with a team leading 9.725. Kaila Kilwein scored 9.700 to tie for 10th place and Brennan Bailes and Paige Bottnao each received a 9.675 to tie for 12th.
Cal, which scored a season high 196.725 last week at Sacramento State, had the individual event winner on each event. Along with the share of first on vault, the Golden Bears saw Dallas Crawford win on bars (9.875) and Leong on beam (9.900) and floor (9.900). Asturias had the top all-around mark with a four-event total of 39.275.
Sacramento State will next compete at Utah State on Feb. 28.
