GYMNASTICS OPENS SEASON WITH RECORD SETTING SCORE AT NORCAL CLASSIC

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Kailey Hansen and Kalliah McCartney tied for first on beam to help propel Sacramento State to its its highest score in a season opener on Sunday in front of a capacity crowd at The Nest. The Hornets placed third in the meet with a 194.400 finishing behind No. 9 Stanford (194.825) and No. 22 California (194.650) and ahead of UC Davis (193.450) and San Jose State (193.325).

Sacramento State's score broke its previous high of 193.575 from the opening meet of 2001.

The Hornets opened the meet with a strong showing on vault, scoring 48.675 led by a 9.800 from Hansen which placed her fourth.  Freshman Julia Konner and Kalliah McCartney tied for sixth with 9.750s. Sacramento State also counted scores from Katie Osaki (9.700) and Tina Necas (9.675).

After a bye, the team posted a 48.350 on bars. Senior Kaila Kilwein set her career high on the event with a 9.800 to tie for fourth place. Freshman Jesse Williams was close behind with a 9.775 to tie for seventh and Paige Bottano was 15th with a 9.725. Both of those scores also set career marks.

On beam, Sacramento State scored 49.050 which ranks sixth in the school record book. Kayla Wonderly opened with a 9.800 to set a career high. After a fall, the remaining four gymnasts each scored 9.775 or better. Alyssa Anderson and Elideth Guerrero each scored 9.775 before Hansen and McCartney followed with 9.850s. That total placed the pair in a five-way tie for top spot on the event.

The Hornets entered the final rotation in second place, leading Stanford by three-tenths. Sacramento State, however, slipped to third with a 48.325 on floor compared to Stanford's 49.050 on bars. Hansen led the way for the Hornets, scoring 9.825 to tie for fifth. Osaki ranked second on the team and placed seventh overall with a 9.775.

Sacramento State will next compete at Arizona State and San Jose State on Saturday, Jan. 11, at 6 p.m.
