WOMEN'S GOLF TWO STROKES OFF THE LEAD AFTER FIRST DAY OF RAINBOW WAHINE

(NOTE: A scoring correction was made late after the first round was completed. A previous version of the story listed Sacramento State as shooting 290 as a team.)

KAPOLEI, Hawaii — Sacramento State freshmen Cloe Grand and Tess Blair shot 70 and 71 to lead the Hornets in the first round of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Monday at Kapolei Golf Course. Grand, who is playing as an individual, holds the individual lead while Blair is one shot back and tied for second.

Sacramento State is within two strokes for the team lead at 2-over par following the first of three rounds. The Hornets totaled 291 and are only trailing Sam Houston State atop the leaderboard. Fellow Big Sky Conference member Weber State is third at 294.

Blair scattered four birdies and three bogeys through her round to finish at 1-under. The freshman opened play with a birdie on the first hole and returned to even after a bogey on the par-4 third. Following three pars, Blair then birdied the par-5 seventh and par-3 eighth to make the turn at 2-under. She remained there until a bogey on the par-5 14th. Blair added a birdie on the par-3 16th but ended her round with a bogey on No. 18.

Nishtha Madan played nearly perfect golf for her first 15 holes as she had birdies on the par-5 first and par-3 eighth to accompany 13 pars. However, she double bogeyed the par-3 16th to get back to even and ended with a pair of birdies. She is tied for sixth place and two strokes off the lead.

Sofie Babic was 2-over par with a round of 74. She parred her first five holes before a birdie on the par-4 sixth. The junior was even at the midway point of her round following a bogey on the par-3 seventh. She started the back nine with four pars, bogeyed the par-5 14th, and parred her last four holes.

Corinne Viden opened the tournament with pars on her first 12 holes. She bogeyed Nos. 13 and 14 to jump to 2-over par before a birdie on the par-4 15th. Viden closed with two pars and a bogey on the par-4 18th.

Sydney Smith completed the five golfers in the lineup with a round of 79. Smith had a birdie and eight bogeys.

Sacramento State also had three individuals competing in the tournament. Cloe Grand led the contingent with a 2-under par round of 70 and holds the individual lead. Grand started on the 10th hole and parred her first four. She was even through nine holes with one birdie and one bogey on the back side of the course. The freshman then made her move on the front nine with three birdies over the first four holes. She then went bogey-birdie-bogey over the next three holes and ended with two pars.

Miki Manta shot 77 and Amelia Hicks 82 to round out the team. Manta was 5-over on her first nine holes but played Nos. 1-9 at even par.
