MADAN AND BLAIR FIRE 1-OVER PAR ROUNDS AT THE PRINCESS ANNE INVITATIONAL

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Senior Nishtha Madan and freshman Tess Blair each shot a 1-over par round of 71 during the first round of The Princess Anne Invitational on Friday. The pair led the Hornets who are tied for seventh place after the first of three rounds.

All five Hornet golfers started on the first hole and the team was 2-over at the midway point of its round. Blair paced the squad at 1-under with a birdie on the par-5 fifth and eight pars over her first nine holes. Madan was even after a bogey on the par-4 fourth and par-4 fifth.

On the back nine, Madan had the low mark at 1-over. She parred her first four holes before  bogey on the par-4 14th. A birdie on the par-3 17th took her back to even before she bogeyed the par-5 18th. Blair was 2-over on her final nine holes. She started the back nine with bogeys on the par-5 first and par-4 third. Her lone bogey came on the par-3 15th but was immediately followed by a bogey on the par-4 16th.

Sofie Babic ranks third on the team with a 73 to stand at 3-over. Babic did not record a bogey during her round but had 15 pars to accompany bogeys on the par-3 second and seventh holes as well as the par-5 10th.

Corinne Viden and Sydney Smith each shot 74 and are tied for 46th. Viden parred her first two holes and then bogeyed the par-4 third and fourth. She fell back to even with birdie on the par-5 sixth and par-3 seventh. However, she double bogeyed the par-3 ninth to make the turn at 2-over. Viden was 4-over after bogeys on Nos. 11 and 12. She had a birdie on the par-4 14th, a bogey on the par-3 15th and then parred her final three holes.

Smith was 1-over on the front nine with a birdie on the par-4 fifth and bogeys on the first and ninth holes. She was 3-over on the back nine with three bogeys and six pars.

Cloe Grand and Amelia Hicks each competed as individuals and had identical scores of 76. The pair started on the 10th hole and were 4-over and 5-over, respectively through their first nine holes. Grand played her final nine at 2-over with a double bogey on the par-4 third and eight pars. Hicks was 1-over on holes Nos. 1-9 with a birdie on the par-5 eighth and two bogeys.

Virginia Tech and LSU were the only two teams to end under par on Friday. The Hokies shot 276 and are 4-under while the Tigers are second at 1-under. Sacramento State will play the second round with Campbell and Coastal Carolina on Saturday. The teams will start on the first hole beginning at 5 a.m. PT.
