WOMEN'S GOLF USES BALANCED LINEUP IN OPENING ROUND OF THE YEAR

WOLCOTT, Colo. — The depth of talent on the Sacramento State women's golf team was showcased during the opening round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Monday as the team recorded five scores between 72 and 75. The Hornets were led by Sofie Babic and Nishtha Madan who each shot an even-par round of 72. Sydney Smith added a 73, Corinne Viden shot 74 and Tess Blair recorded a 75.

As a team, Sacramento State totaled 291 to finish 3-over par. That score ties the team for sixth place among the 18-team field. Ole Miss and Pepperdine are tied atop the leaderboard at 281 with Denver two strokes back in third place. The three-round tournament will continue on Tuesday.

Babic opened on the 10th hole and found herself at 2-over following bogeys on the par-4 11th and 13th. She remained there until a birdie on the par-3 17th and then dropped to 1-under following birdies on the par-5 second and par-4 third. The senior then bracketed bogeys around a birdie on the par-5 fifth before ending her round with three pars.

Madan birdied the 11th hole but quickly jumped to 2-over after a triple bogey on the par-4 13th. She made the turn at 2-over following a birdie on the par-3 17th and a bogey on the par-5 18th. The senior was magnificent on the front nine with birdies on the par-5 second and par-3 seventh to accompany seven pars.

Smith battled through her first nine holes which featured two birdies, three pars, three bogeys and a double bogey. Like Madan, she was near perfect on the front nine, playing the holes at 2-under par with birdies on the par-4 first and eighth.

Viden was also 3-over on holes Nos. 10-18. The junior started with a birdie on the par-3 10th but had a triple bogey on the par-4 13th and a bogey on the par-5 15th. She birdied the par-3 17th but immediately followed with a bogey on 18. Viden rallied on the front nine with birdies on the par-5 second and fifth holes to move to 1-over. After a par on No. 6, she double bogeyed the par-3 seventh to return to 3-over. She ended her round with a birdie on the par-4 eighth and a par on No. 9.

Blair began her collegiate career with a birdie on the par-3 10th. She was 1-under on her first nine with a bogey on No. 11 and a birdie on the par-4 13th. The freshman ran into some trouble on the first four holes of the front nine with bogeys on the first and fourth and a triple bogey on the par-5 second. She bounced back with birdies on the par-5 fifth and par-4 sixth to get back to 2-over and ended with a bogey on the par-3 ninth.

Sacramento State will be paired with Nebraska and Kennesaw State during the second round. The three teams will go off the first tee beginning at 8:45 a.m. PT.
