WOMEN'S GOLF WINS THIRD STRAIGHT TITLE; BABIC IS MEDALIST AT COWGIRL CLASSIC

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State women's golf team continued to make history en route to its third consecutive team title on Tuesday. The Hornets finished first at the 20-team Wyoming Cowgirl Classic and won the event by 22 strokes. The team totaled 279-287-288-854 to set the school three-round record by nine strokes and also had three individuals in the top five as Sofie Babic was the medalist and Astha Madan and Julia Becker tied for second.

Sacramento State set the school single-round record on Monday after shooting 9-under par 279. The team was 1-under par in the second round before shooting even par on Tuesday. Eight of the top 11 single-round team scores in program history have come during the 2017-18 season and all 11 have taken place in the last three years. The Hornets have also six of the top 10 54-hole tournament scores at Sacramento State this season.

Babic earned her first collegiate victory after shooting 69 in the final round. The sophomore shot a career-best 71-71-69-211 which moved her into a tie for the lowest 54-hole total in school history. Babic played the front nine at 3-under par with birdies on the par-5 third and seventh and the par-4 ninth. She parred her first four holes on the back nine before a bogey on the par-4 14th. From there, Babic closed the tournament with pars on three of her final four holes as well as a birdie on the par-3 17th.

Astha Madan and Becker each recorded even par rounds of 72 on Tuesday and tied for second place in the tournament after both shot 70-72-72-214. Madan was 2-over through her first three holes with bogeys on Nos. 1 and 3. The senior played her next 12 holes at 4-under par with the help of birdies on the par-4 fifth, 10th and 12th as well as the par-3 11th. However, she bogeyed the par-4 16th and par-4 18th to finish at even par. Becker began her final round with a birdie on the par-4 second hole but found herself at 2-over after bogeys on Nos. 4, 7 and 8. A birdie on the par-4 ninth and par on No. 10 placed her at 1-over at the midway point of her round. Following a bogey on the 12th, she birdied the par-5 13th and ended her round with a birdie on the par-4 first.

Corinne Viden and Nishtha Madan each shot 75 in the final round. Viden tied for 13th place with a total of 68-75-75-218. Her third round was comprised of 15 pars and three bogeys. Nishtha Madan was 4-over through her first eight holes before birdies on the par-4 12th and par-5 16th. She bogeyed No. 17 and ended her tournament with three pars. Madan tied for 25th place at 74-72-75-221.

Sacramento State also had one individual in the field in Katie Dunaway. The junior recorded her best round of the tournament, finishing with a 2-over par round of 74. Dunaway had a birdie (No. 12) and three bogeys during her round. Her total of 85-78-74-237 tied her for 91st in the tournament.

The Hornets will conclude their regular season at the Big Sky Championships in Boulder City, Nev., on April 20-22. The winning team at the tournament will earn the conference's automatic berth to an NCAA regional.
