ROSEVILLE, Calif. — The Sacramento State women's golf team recorded its third best single-round score in school history and has three players among the top five during the first day of the Sacramento State Invitational on Monday at Sierra View Country Club.
The Hornets shot a 4-under par total of 284 for its best score of the season and the third lowest in school history. The Hornets shot 295 in the second round are 3-over par heading into the final round on Tuesday. Sacramento State was just two strokes off the pace of San Francisco after the first round but could not keep pace with the Dons in the second round as USF holds a 12-stroke edge.
Astha Madan shot 71 in both rounds and is tied for second place. Madan parred her first eight holes in the morning and made the turn at 1-under with a birdie on the par-4 ninth. Three bogeys over the first four holes on the back nine moved her to 2-over. She then birdied the the par-4 14th and 15th and ended with a birdie on the par-5 18th. Madan's second round had three birdies and two bogeys, including another birdie on No. 18.
San Francisco's Vanessa Ha holds the individual lead at 9-under par. Ha shot 71 in the first round and then set her personal best with an 8-under par 64 in the second.
Sofie Babic sits in fourth place at 68-75-143. Babic held the individual after the first round after shooting 68 to tie for the second best in school history and bettering her previous low of 70. The sophomore crushed the front side of the course with four birdies over the first eight holes. She parred her final 10 holes. Babic had four bogeys on the her first 11 holes of the second round to move to even during the day. After five pars, she birdied the par-3 17th and ended with a par.
Julia Becker completes the Hornets in the top five as she is in fifth at 71-74-145. Becker was even at the midway point of her first round with two birdies and two bogeys on holes Nos. 6-9. A birdie on the par-4 11th came before a bogey on the par-4 13th. After four pars, she returned to red numbers with a birdie on No. 18.
Sacramento State counted a 74 from Corinne Viden to complete its first round score. Viden had three birdies during the round but also had a bogey and a pair of double bogeys. She went on to shoot 75 in the second round and is tied for 12th place. The freshman had two birdies and four bogeys in the afternoon.
Nishtha Madan shot 78-75-153 to place her in a tie for 28th. The sophomore was 4-over through her first three holes of the day with a double bogey on No. 1 and bogeys on Nos. 2 and 3. She made the turn at 4-over and stood at 6-over before a birdie on the par-3 17th. However, a bogey on No. 18 gave her a 78. Her second round got off to a better start as she had a birdie and bogey on the front nine. She moved to 1-under with a birdie on the par-4 11th but had four bogeys on the next six holes.
Sacramento State also had a trio of student-athletes playing as individuals. Katie Dunaway led the group by shooting 77-75-152 and is tied for 24th. Dunaway had two birdies, three bogeys and a pair of double bogeys in the first round. She added three birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey in the afternoon. Danielle Lozano recorded rounds of 79-83-162 and Amelia Hicks shot 87-83-170.
The Hornets will start the third round on Tuesday at 8:50 a.m. Sacramento State will be paired with San Francisco and Northern Colorado.
