WOMEN'S GOLF RUNS AWAY WITH TEAM TITLE AT FRESNO STATE CLASSIC

FRESNO, Calif. — The Sacramento State women's golf team completed its wire-to-wire run to the team title at the Fresno State Classic on Tuesday. The Hornets shot 285-291-289-865 at Copper River Country Club and finished 18 strokes ahead of second-place Indiana. The score was the second best 54-hole total in Sacramento State history.

The Hornets were guided by Nishtha Madan who shot 60-70-73-212 to finish in third place. Madan's total was the second best all-time by a Hornet and left her just one stroke off the school record of 212 which was set by Julia Becker in 2016. In the third round, Madan began with a bogey on the par-4 third but worked her way back to even with birdies on the par-3 fifth and par-4 10th. She dropped to 2-under with birdies on the par-4 14th and par-5 15th but followed those holes with a double bogey on the par-4 16th. The sophomore ended her round with a bogey on the par-5 second.

Sofie Babic tied for seventh place following an even-par round of 72. She was 2-over through seven holes before birdying the par-3 11th, par-4 14th and par-5 15th to fall to 1-under. A bogey on the par-4 18th was trailed by a birdie on No. 1 but like Madan, she also ended her round with a bogey (No. 3).

The biggest improvement from the first day came from freshman Corinne Viden who shot 79-73-69-221 to tie for ninth place. Viden posted her career best during the third round with the help of a fantastic start where she birdied her first four holes (Nos. 2-5) and five of her first six. From there, she had 10 straight pars and parred 12 of her final 13 holes with the exception being a bogey on the par-3 17th.

Astha Madan tied for 12th place with rounds of 71-75-76-222. The senior was 3-over on the front side of the course with a birdie, two bogeys and a double bogey. She was 1-over on the back nine with a birdie on the par-3 17th and two bogeys.

Julia Becker tied for 18th place as Sacramento State had all five of its golfers in the top 20. Becker shot 70-81-75-226 during the tournament. Her third round started with four pars but got off course with five bogeys on her next eight holes. She rebounded by playing her final six holes at 2-under with birdies on the par-5 15 and par-4 18th.

Katie Dunaway competed as an individual for the Hornets and tied for 38th place. Dunaway had a birdie, two bogeys, two double bogeys and a triple bogey in her final round.

Sacramento State returns to action on March 19-20 at the Sacramento State Invitational at Sierra View Country Club.
