FRESNO, Calif. — The Sacramento State women's golf posted its third lowest round in school history during the opening day of the Fresno State Classic on Monday at Copper River CC. The Hornets shot 285 to finish 3-under par in the first round were even before play was halted in the second round due to darkness. Sacramento State leads Indiana by 17 strokes in the team standings with both teams having three golfers left on the course.

Nishtha Madan is the individual leader after shooting 69-70-139. Madan started quickly with birdies on the par-5 second, par-3 fifth and par-4 10th in the first round. Her first bogey came on the 11th but was immediately followed by a birdie on the par-5 12th. The sophomore bogeyed the par-4 14th but finished at 3-under after a birdie on the par-4 16th. She started the second round with a birdie on the first and was 1-under at the turn. After falling back to even, Madan played her final five holes at 2-under with birdies on the par-4 16th and 18th.

Astha Madan was also under par in the opening round with a 70. She is tied for fifth place at 1-over but still has three holes remaining in her second round. Madan was never worse than even in the first round as she birdied the par-5 fourth and bogeyed the par-3 eighth on the front side of the course. She was 1-under on the back nine with birdies on the par-4 10th and 14th and one bogey. The senior had just one bogey to go with 11 pars on her first 12 holes of the second round. She bogeyed the par-4 13th and 14th before a birdie on the par-5 15th.

Sofie Babic was able to complete her rounds and is tied for 12th at 75-73-148. Babic had two birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey in the first round.  She was 1-over midway through the second round and double bogeyed the par-4 10th to jump to 3-over. Babic parred her next four holes and added birdies on the par-5 15th and par-3 17th.

Corinne Viden shot 79 in the first round but is 1-under through 15 holes in the second round. Viden had five bogeys and a double bogey without a birdie to start the tournament. She started the second round with a birdie on the first hole and dropped to 2-under with a birdie on the par-3 eighth. Her lone bogey came on the par-4 ninth and was trailed by six pars.

Julia Becker ranked second on the team in the first round with a 2-under par 70. Becker had a birdie and bogey on the front nine but made her move on the back nine with birdies on the par-3 11th and par-4 13th. The second round was not as kind to the junior as she was 10-over on the front nine with four bogeys, a double bogey and a quadruple bogey. She steadied her round with four pars on the back nine before a bogey on the par-4 14th and a birdie on the par-5 15th.

Katie Dunaway is competing as an individual and is tied for 36th place. Dunaway shot 78 in the first round with two birdies, six bogeys and a double bogey. She added a 76 in the second round with a birdie and five bogeys.

The second round will conclude at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The teams will then be regrouped for the third round which will begin at 9 a.m.
