WAHIAWA, Hawaii — The Sacramento State women's golf team shot 1-over par in the final round of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Wednesday to finish in third place. The Hornets totaled 300-286-289-875 to record the fourth best 54-hole score in school history.
Sacramento State had the third best score during the third round, trailing only Ole Miss and Grand Canyon who finished at 288. Those two schools took first and second place, respectively, in the 12-team field. Ole Miss, which is ranked 48th nationally, won the event with a three-round total of 861. Grand Canyon shot 864 to claim second. The Hornets had a 10-stroke advantage of 49th-ranked Memphis who finished fourth while Princeton and Toledo tied for fifth.
Nishtha Madan recorded her first career top five finish with a tie for third place. The sophomore followed her school record of 67 in the second round with an even-par 72. Her total of 74-67-72-213 is tied for second place in the Hornet record book. Madan's score was just two strokes off of Julia Becker's school record of 211 which came at last season's Rainbow Wahine Invitational where she was the medalist.
Madan had to rally after a double bogey on the par-5 third. It didn't take long for the sophomore to return to under par as she had birdies on the par-3 fifth, par-5 sixth and par-4 eight to make the turn at 1-under. She started the back nine with two pars before a bogey on the par-3 12th. Madan dropped back to 1-under with a birdie on the par-4 14th but finished even following a bogey on the par-4 16th.
Fellow sophomore Sofie Babic surged into a tie for 11th place with a 2-under par to lead the team on Wednesday. Babic started on the third hole with consecutive birdies and was 3-under following a birdie on the par-4 seventh. She then parred eight consecutive holes before a sequence of bogey-birdie-bogey on Nos. 16-18. Babic ended her day with two pars and finished the tournament at 75-74-70-219.
Becker matched Babic's total after shooting a season-best 74-73-72-219. The junior was 1-over at the midway point of her round with two birdies and three bogeys. She was steady over he final nine holes with eight pars and a birdie on the par-5 15th which took her back to even.
Astha Madan and Corinne Viden tied for 28th place. Madan carded rounds of 77-74-75-226 while Viden finished at 77-72-77-226. Madan began her round on the fourth hole and was 1-over following a bogey on the par-3 fifth. A birdie on the par-5 11th returned her to even before a double bogey on the par-4 14th and a bogey on the par-5 15th. From there, the senior parred her final six holes.
Viden was 1-over through nine holes before a birdie on the par-3 12th moved her to even. She encountered trouble on holes 15-18 where a pair of double bogeys and a bogey made her 5-over.
Sacramento State also had three individuals in the tournament which were led by Katie Dunaway who shot 78-75-77-230. Amelia Hicks tied for 47th at 74-75-82-231 and Danielle Lozano shot 80-80-78-239 to tie for 56th place. The 54-hole totals were career bests for Hicks and Lozano.
Memphis' Sydney Colwill was the medalist with a total of 69-69-73-211. Katy Harris of Ole Miss was one stroke back while Nishtha Madan and Julia Johnson of Ole Miss were two shots off the lead.
The event was the final tournament during the fall portion of its schedule for Sacramento State. The team will return to competition on Feb. 12 at The Gold Rush hosted by Long Beach State.
