WAHIAWA, Hawaii — Sophomore Nistha Madan set the Sacramento State record by shooting 5-under par 67 in the second round of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Tuesday. Madan's performance followed a 74 in the morning and tied her for second place after the first day.
Sacramento State is third heading into the final round. The Hornets shot 300-286-586 and only trail Ole Miss (573) and Grand Canyon (576) in the 12-team field.
Madan's second round score placed her ahead of four golfers who had shot 68 for the Hornets — most recently by Julia Becker who did it once each of the last two seasons. She started her round on the third hole with a par but then had birdies on three of her next four holes. After a pair of pars, she dropped to 5-under with a birdie on the par-4 10th and par-5 11th. Her lone bogey of the second round happened on the par-3 12th but Madan returned to 5-under with a birdie on the par-4 16th. She ended her day with four pars.
Madan's first round was comprised of three birdies and five bogeys to leave her at 2-over. She was 2-under at two different points of the round by had four bogeys over a six-hole stretch.
Becker is tied for 16th place at 74-73-147. The junior scattered three birdies and five bogeys during the opening round. She was even through her first 15 holes but ended with bogeys on the par-4 first and par-3 second. In the second round she had back-to-back birdies on the par-4 10th and par-5 11th to move to 1-under. However, a double bogey on the par-3 12th and par-4 14th took her to 2-over before a birdie on the par-4 16th.
Sofie Babic, Corinne Viden and Amelia Hicks each totaled 149 and are tied for 24th. Babic started on the first hole and was 1-under after a birdie on the par-3 fifth. She added four bogeys in the round to finish at 75. The sophomore was 2-under at the midway point of her second round with the help of birdies on the par-5 third and sixth. On the back nine, she had four consecutive bogeys (Nos. 11-14) to move to 2-over. She had a birdie, two pars and a bogey over her final four holes.
Viden shot 77 in the first round and added an even-par 72 in the afternoon. Her opening round had two birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey. Viden started the second round on the third hole and was even through six holes. She then had an eight-hole stretch which alternated two bogeys and two birdies. A birdie on the par-4 18th took her to 1-under but she immediately bogeyed the par-4 first to finish even.
Hicks, who was playing as an individual, posted the second and third lowest rounds of her career. She had two birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey in the first round. In the afternoon, she bogeyed her first three holes and was eventually 4-over after a par-5 sixth. She closed with eight pars and a birdie on the par-4 14th.
Senior Astha Madan is tied for 35th with rounds of 77-74-151. Madan had a birdie on the par-4 ninth and also had six bogeys. She had three birdies in the second round along with five bogeys.
Katie Dunaway and Danielle Lozano joined Hicks as individuals. Dunaway shot 78-75-153 and is tied for 42nd place. The junior had two birdies and eight bogeys in the opening round. She had two birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey in the latter round.
Lozano shot 80 in both rounds and sits alone in 57th. In the first round, she had a birdie, seven bogeys and a double bogey. The sophomore added six bogeys and a double bogey in the second round.
Sacramento State will conclude the tournament on Wednesday with a single round. The Hornets will be paired with Hawaii and Memphis beginning at 1 p.m.
