MADAN, WOMEN'S GOLF IN FIRST PLACE AFTER OPENING ROUND OF AGGIE INVITATIONAL

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Astha Madan birdied five of her final six holes to finish the opening round of the NM State Aggie Invitational at 2-under par and help the Sacramento State women's golf team take the team lead. Madan shot 70 and has a one-stroke lead in the field. Her efforts guided the Hornets to a 1-under par total of 287 which is seven strokes ahead of second place UTEP.

Madan started the tournament on the 17th hole with a par but was 1-over after a bogey on the par-4 19th. She then recorded four consecutive pars before a double bogey on the par-4 fifth. After five more pars, she caught fire over holes Nos. 11-16. The junior started with birdies on the par-3 11th, par-5 12th and par-4 13th to move to even. She than parred No. 14 and birdied the par-5 15th and par-4 16th. Her total is tied for the third-lowest of her career, trailing only a pair of 69s.

True freshman Corinne Viden is tied for second overall following a round of 1-under par 71. Viden also had a slow start with a bogey on her first hole (No. 18) and later a double bogey on the par-5 fourth. Viden played her final 13 holes at 4-under par with birdies on the par-3 sixth, par-5 eighth, par-3 11th and par-5 12th. She did not have a bogey during the stretch and the score was the lowest in her young career.

Sofie Babic and Nishtha Madan each finished at 1-over par with rounds of 73 to tie the pair are for eighth place individually. Babic opened with a bogey on the par-4 16th but returned to even with a birdie on the par-3 17th. A bogey on the par-4 third moved her to 1-over until she birdied the par-5 eighth. Four more pars preluded a bogey on the par-4 13th.

Nishtha Madan was had three consecutive pars to start her round but then bogeyed the par-4 third and par-5 fourth to jump to 2-over. The sophomore birdied the par-4 fifth but a bogey on the par-4 ninth returned her to 2-over. She closed her round with a birdie on the par-3 11th and seven pars over her final eight holes.

Julia Becker completed the Sacramento State lineup with a round of 79 which has her tied for 37th place. Becker did not record  birdie during the day and had five bogeys and a double bogey during her round.

The Hornets were also represented by Katie Dunaway and Amelia Hicks who competed as individuals. Dunaway was 1-over through her first nine holes with a birdie and two bogeys. Her back nine consisted of a birdie, two pars, four bogeys and a triple bogey. Her score of 80 has her tied for 43rd place. Amelia Hicks is in 51st place following a round of 83. Hicks had eight pars, nine bogeys and a double bogey in her first round.

Sacramento State's team score of 287 is tied for the fourth lowest in school history and is tied for the best this season. The top nine single round team scores by the Hornets have come in the last two seasons. UTEP is the closest team to Sacramento State in the team standings. The Miners shot 294 and are seven strokes back. Santa Clara and UT Rio Grande Valley are tied for third at 301.

The second round of the three-round tournament will begin at 7:30 a.m. PT on Tuesday. Sacramento State will be paired with UTEP and Santa Clara.
