BECKER SHOOTS 72 TO PACE WOMEN'S GOLF IN FIRST ROUND OF GOLFWEEK CHALLENGE

WOLCOTT, Colo. — Junior Julia Becker shot an ever par round of 72 to lead the Sacramento State women's golf team in the opening round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Monday at Red Sky Golf Club. The tournament features one school from 18 different Div. I conferences and will continue with single rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Sacramento State finished the opening day at 10-over par with a total of 298. The Hornets are tied for seventh place and find themselves 11 strokes behind San Diego State for the overall team lead. The Aztecs are followed in the top five by Michigan (290), Pepperdine (290), Denver (292) and SMU (293).

Becker was extremely consistent during the day, recording one birdie and one bogey on each side of the course. She opened play on the 10th hole and had six pars before a birdie on the par-4 16th. After a bogey on the par-3 17th and a par, she made the turn even. On the front side of the course, she had a bogey on the par-5 second and stayed at 1-over until ending her day with a birdie on the par-3 ninth. Her score has her tied for 13th place and places her three strokes off the lead.

Nishtha Madan ranked second on the team with a 2-over par round of 74 and is tied for 27th. Madan parred her first three holes and was 1-under after a birdie on the par-4 13th. A double bogey on the par-4 14th took her into the black and she later jumped to 2-over after a bogey on the par-4 16th. The sophomore, however, was even at the midway point of her round after an eagle on the 505-yard par-5 18th. She remained even through holes 1-3 but found herself at 3-over after bogeys on the par-4 fourth, sixth and eighth. A birdie on No. 9 dropped her back to 2-over to end her day.

Freshman Corinne Viden shot 75 to finish at 3-over par and ties her for 39th place. Viden birdied the par-4 11th but immediately moved to 1-over with a double bogey on the par-4 12th. She had bogeys on Nos. 15, 16 and 17 to take her to 4-over before a birdie on No. 18. After a par on the first hole, she birdied the par-5 second to fall back to 2-over. However, consecutive bogeys on the par-4 third and fourth returned her to 4-over where she stayed until a birdie on the par-3 ninth.

The final score towards the team total came from Sofie Babic who shot 77 and is tied for 50th. Babic double bogeyed her second hole (No. 11) but rallied with birdies on the par-4 12th and 16th and par-5 18th to make the turn at 1-under par. A quadruple bogey on the par-5 second hole took her to 3-over before she earned a stroke back with a birdie on the par-5 fifth. Babic ended her round with consecutive double bogeys on the par-3 seventh and par-4 eighth and a birdie on the par-3 ninth.

Astha Madan recorded a round of 78 and is tied for 57th. Madan had a triple bogey on her second hole but played the next seven holes at 1-over to stand at 4-over at the midway point. On the front side, she had three bogeys and a birdie.

Elodie Van Dievoet of Michigan is the individual leader at 3-under. She holds a 1-stroke lead over five others who are tied for second place.
