PULLMAN, Wash. — Playing through rain, wind, temperatures in the low 50s and even a brief bout of hail, the Sacramento State women's golf team finished in second place at the WSU Cougar Cup on Tuesday at Palouse Ridge GC.

The Hornets had three individual finish among the top five with sophomore Sofie Babic leading the way by tying for second place and Astha Madan and Julia Becker tying for fifth place. The team finished six strokes back of host Washington State for the team title and its three-round total of 297-287-295-879 is tied for the third-lowest in school history.

Babic led the team in the final round with an ever-par 72. She started slowly with three bogeys on her first five holes and stayed at 3-over until a birdie on the par-5 ninth. She surged to under par on the back nine with birdies on the par-3 13th and par-4 14th and 15th. Two more pars came before a bogey on the par-5 18th. Here total of 73-72-72-217 is the second lowest of her career and ties her for the seventh best in program history.

Astha Madan followed her round of 69 with a 1-over par 73. Madan opened on the second hole with a par but followed with consecutive bogeys on Nos. 3 and 4. She was 4-over through her first nine holes before rallying with birdies on the par-4 12th, 14th and 15th. She finished the tournament at 78-69-73-220 to tie for fifth.

Becker matched Madan's 54-hole total after shooting 73-73-74-220. On Tuesday, the junior was 1-over on each side of the course with a birdie and two bogeys on both halves. She had birdies on the par-4 third and par-3 11th during her round.

Freshman Corinne Viden and sophomore Nishtha Madan each shot 76 in the final round. Viden placed 10th overall at 75-73-76-224 while Madan tied for 14th at 76-76-76-228. In the third round, Viden started with three consecutive bogeys (Nos. 3-5) to take her to 3-over. A birdie on the par-4 eighth and a bogey on the par-3 11th kept her at 3-over until a birdie on the par-4 15th. She closed her round with three pars and two bogeys over her final five holes. Nishtha Madan opened with a double bogey on the par-4 third and was 3-over through eight holes before birdies on the 11th, 12th and 15th took her back to even. She had bogeys on Nos. 16 and 18 and a double bogey on the par-4 first to finish at 4-over.

Sacramento State also had two individuals in the field. Katie Dunaway shot 78 on Tuesday and tied for 38th overall at 81-81-78-240. Dunaway had a birdie, five bogeys and a double bogey during her round. Amelia Hicks recorded a third round of 85 and tied for 42nd in the tournament. Hicks had a birdie, seven bogeys, a double bogey and a quintuple bogey on Tuesday.

Sacramento State will return to action for the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Vail, Colo., on Sept. 25-27.
